The Reunion Ramble Recall

The 50th Reunion Ramble Recalled

It is now just under a year since the intrepid classmates, wives and Trevor Webster started the Reunion Ramble down the Wild Coast.  Conceived and led by George and Gwenda Euvrard with Pikkie Joynt as guide and cultural adviser, the group commenced their oddesey.

Planned over seven nights, the Ramble was a 150km hike down the beautiful Wild Coast.  As many will know, it is also a very demanding journey, with rivers to cross, cliffs to climb and beaches to tire the legs.

The attached journal created by George - The Reunion Ramble 2022 - is a tribute to those who walked and talked their way down the coast.  Spectacular scenery, classmates from afar and whom we haven't seen in years, and a great degree of friendship and fellowship.

I was very fortunate to join the Ramblers for the last night at Gonubie and walk the last day.  The evening at the Gonubie Hotel was very special.  The Ramblers knew the end was in sight and the party was joined by numerous classmates, as can be seen from the journal.

Starting out from the hotel on the Thursday morning in a clear sky held good for the day.  Along the Gonubie sea front to German Bay where a path led to the beach.  From there it was all along the beach, first to Bonza Bay and then on to Nahoon.  The Nahoon River was flowing more strongly and deeper than I had expected.  Still having completed what is effectively the second half of the annual Surfer's Marathon, my soul was at peace.

We had a short stop at the delightful Beach Break cafe, next to the old tea room which is now municipal offices (what a awaste!).  Afrer a cup of tea and a scone and we ready for the next leg.  Up Harewood Drive, past my first flat at Courtleigh, along Galway Road and up to Gleneagles and on to the Old Boys Club.  Pikkie and others pointing out where various personalities had lived in Nahoon.

There was a large contingent of boys greeting us at Old Boys, and they joined us in the throng that was the final leg of the Ramble to the school.  On arrival at the school, the Ramblers planted a Sneezewood tree right in front of Lorrie Greef's old woodwork class at the Primary.

My sincere thanks to George and all the Ramblers for being included, only walking the one day.  On top of what was a very emotional Founders' experience for me, the Ramble remains a highlight.
