David Lones

David Stanley Lones – 8/3/1954 – 3-10-2022

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of our friend, class- and team-mate David Stanley Lones.

David Stanley Lones – Attended Selborne Primary and Selborne College where he matriculated in 1972 in our 10B class. While at College he played 1st Team cricket and rugby and was a school prefect in his matric year.

After school Dave did his one-year military service at the Youngsfield Anti Aircraft military base in the Western Cape.  After National Service he attended Natal University Durban campus graduating with a BCom majoring in accounts.  This is also where he met his wife - Lorraine Joubert.

David and Lorraine moved to Johannesburg where he joined Checkers and managed their financial side for fresh produce. (Here he and John McLennan Class of 73 became good friend working together).  He left Checkers to take over as the financial director of a pharmaceutical supply company where he stayed right up until his retirement at the age of 60.

After university Lorraine joined Woolworths and enjoyed much success in the HR department before becoming a stay-at-home mom when their daughters were born. Now that they are out of the house Lorraine works part time in reception for a medical doctor.

They have two lovely daughters Kerry and Megan.  Kerry is the elder (35) and she was married to Tyrone Visser in August this year. We were delighted that Dave was well enough to walk her down the aisle and give his father of the bride’s speech at the wedding reception. Kerry is in the accounting field and is part of the finance team for Balwin Properties.

Megan (33) is a qualified teacher who is presently teaching in the UAE. Megan is a year 3 teacher in Abu Dhabi. Mathematics is her passion so, in addition to her class teaching, she is the Head of Mathematics at Charter Primary School.

Dave gave freely of his time being the chairperson of the Edenglen community forum, the forum responsible for safety of all the homes in that area.

Dave was diagnosed a few years ago with prostate cancer and after treatment we were encouraged when the cancer was in remission. Unfortunately, the cancer returned and metastasized spreading into the bones and although under new treatment this was not successful.  Dave was in much pain.  His passing, although sad for his family and friends, has relieved him of the suffering he endured towards the end of his life.

At his Memorial service all the eulogies had some common treads – Dave as a true gentleman – Dave as a loyal family man and friend – Dave as having a great moral compass reflecting honesty, integrity and compassion for others.  This is certainly the Dave we all remember.

We offer our sincere condolences to Lorraine, Kerry and Megan and their families.  Also to brother Alan, sisters Trish and Sandie and their families.

Ah that is sad news. Farewell Dave. I did have an occasion to have a meal at his home not that many years ago. A humble man of integrity. Rest well Dave.
